Convince a very conservative Texas legislature and governor to pass a huge cigarette tax. Done.
Convince Puget Sound Region voters to approve funding for a mass transit system that included light rail for the first time ever. Done.
Lead a team that drove passage of 100 significant pieces of legislation improving nutrition and physical activity in less than two years. Done.
He does this with a strong, well-developed strategic approach, a clear understanding of how to deliver a well-framed message that tells a compelling story, the vision to lead teams of passionate advocates and an unrelenting sense of optimism.
Prior to starting his consulting business, Carter spent fifteen years driving change at the American Heart Association (AHA). He served AHA in multiple roles, leading innovation, developing strategic partnerships, and leading a team of policy change experts who spurred positive, healthy change in all 50 states.
At the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Carter led the creation of a powerful, 400,000-member grassroots force that stood up to the tobacco industry when they were at the peak of their political power.
Carter has been a featured speaker at dozens of local, state, national and international conferences. He has been a co-chair of the successful Innovate to Motivate National Conference for Political Involvement Professionals. Carter was a founding board member of South Central Minnesota Food Recovery, is a past member of the steering committee for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and is a past President of America Walks.
In addition to his public health work, Carter Headrick has managed political campaigns in four states. He also worked seven years as a radio announcer, producer, and news reporter.
On Sunday nights in the fall, winter and spring, you will find Carter sliding on the ice at the Denver Curling Club.
